We often hear that the best business decisions are made when we are rational and don’t allow our thinking to be clouded by our emotions. As a result, many of us have become practised at burying, ignoring or dismissing our emotions.

Yet we do so at our peril. Increasingly we have become aware that good mental and physical health depends on becoming acquainted with our emotions; acknowledging, exploring and speaking about them with others.

If we are unable to articulate our emotions, we can gain clues to them by noticing the physical tension in our bodies. One of my clients notices a tightness in his chest and we’ve associated this with his suppressed anger when his colleagues don’t meet his standards.

Another writes in his journal when he can feel something is wrong, but can’t quite place it.

We can learn to regulate our emotions rather than suppress them.

What practices do you use to get in touch with and regulate your emotions?

I invite you to have a conversation with me about how to develop trust and connection with your colleagues by regulating your emotions. Send me a note sylvana@sylvanacaloni.com or call me +44 (0) 79520 68133 and we can arrange a time.
